Winter doldrums

Another snow shower has blanketed the region, making for a beautiful scenic scape but also keeping us indoors. I've found this winter to be the worst part of unemployment because it is much too cold to go for a walk around the block or a bike ride on the trails. Those daily exercises were good for the muscles and soothing for the soul. The bike rides, especially, gave me time to ponder what my next moves would be to find a job.

However, I've found that the winter weather has allowed me to become much more productive in searching for work. And there seems to be more jobs available now that the holidays have passed and companies are more willing to add payroll. That doesn't mean it seems more likely to find a job, but it does appear that more companies are advertising.

So the occasional glance out my office window gives me a gorgeous reprieve from the automated job applications I've been filling out for more than seven months.

  1. That's a nice view. It sure beats the mud we had a few days ago. Continued good luck on that job search. Let's hope 2010 is the year of the bounce-back.

  2. There are some squirrels playing in the snow outside my window. I feel like Milton from Office Space. Now, where's my stapler?

  4. Did somebody have a bad experience with a squirrel? I really enjoy watching them, especially when they're swinging from a bird feeder.

  5. One time a squirrel fell out of a tree into the spokes of my biycle on a trail. It was ugly. You need to be aware of squirrels falling out of the sky.

  6. Is that Paul Brown who hates squirrels?

And Scott, how the heck did he fall into your bike spokes? Were your spokes generating jet engine-like thrust/sunction? Sounds like an interesting tale, and I'd like to hear more.

  8. that is paul brown hating on the squirrels. they sit in the middle of intersections, they were in the walls of my old apartment, they chewed through my bosses roof and ripped out the insulation. i think they are bored.

  9. That is a true story about the squirrel falling out of a tree into my bike's path. The animal is known to slip off branches or misjudge its footings and fall to the ground. This one was stunned and dazed as I continued on my way along the Yough River Trail.

  10. I'm not denying it fell into the path of your bike, Scott. I just want to know how it ended up in your spokes and what happened in the immediate aftermath.

And, Paul... squirrels don't seem to be nearly as mischievous as raccoons. They really know how to mess stuff up.
